Today, for anybody entering the field of software, it makes great sense to choose a career in embedded systems as there is no dearth of opportunities. It also gives immense intellectual satisfaction to work on the development of embedded systems because you work with the core of the system very near to the hardware without any barriers. The systems that you build touch the common man’s life. You write software to control appliances like washers, dryers, refrigerators and cars. What are Embedded Systems

Have you ever wondered what is inside your refrigerator?

No, not the food! We are talking about the intelligence that allows the refrigerator to do everything it does to keep your food fresh.

Think Embedded Chips, not Potato Chips!

For example in your refrigerator one or more chips control the temperature by turning on and off the compressor. Another chip might sense and control the making of ice.

Your fridge is a simple example.  Even more complex embedded systems are at work in your watch, mobile phone, DVD player, washing machine, the microwave oven, the digital camera, the car engine control unit – the list is endless. What makes all these systems intelligent is the embedded system which is at the core of these devices

Today the world is entering an era of pervasive computing. During the course of our daily routine, we interact with many systems which have some kind of intelligence built in. We take this for granted – so much so that we don’t even notice it happening.

Over the years, the use of embedded systems is expanding in leaps and bounds. The devices and gadgets that we use in our everyday lives are but an extremely small part of the total span of applications where embedded systems are used. Today, there is practically no engineering field remaining in which embedded system are not used. From devices as simple as toys to those as critical as a pacemaker that keeps a person alive, you will find embedded systems working silently in the background.  There are systems controlling crucial functions of vehicles ranging from two-wheelers and cars to massive airliners and even satellites.

Next time you get in a car, try to think of the dozen or more interlinked embedded systems on board. These systems control various functions like engine control, gearbox, car navigation, access control and power steering.  When you perform a mundane action such as turning on the air conditioning or opening the power windows, a small chip somewhere is making sure your commands are followed.  In modern cars, more complex tasks are often controlled by these tiny computers too – when the driver presses the brake, an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) kicks in, monitoring the wheels so that they don’t lock and adjusting the brake pressure if they do, displaying information on the dashboard and even turning on the rear lights.

Is this the right career path for me?

From an individual’s point of view, if you have an affinity and passion towards building Futuristic Products, Gadgets in the areas of home automation, Industries like Telecom, Networking, Aeronautics, Manufacturing and activities that will drive day to day life, Embedded Systems is the career path.
